The North Portal.

An outbound 1700 car enters the north end of the tunnel. The face of the hill is shear rock, so the frame was erected to save the cars from falling rock, people too I suppose. The S T O P lights were for automobiles and trucks, but it was regularly ignored. This is Sycamore Street that turns left at the tunnel and winds up the face of Mt. Washington. Many times I rode my bike down that street, then pushed it back up. The Pennsylvania Railroad is above the camera.
