Waiting for Green.

In 1946 PCC 1240 is waiting for the GO light, and for that derail just ahead to allow him to stay on the track. That railing had its share of uses. Early on it separated the signal tower from the public. In later years it give physical support to the motorman who had to leave the car to crowbar the derailer when the "auto throw" didn't function. The tracks were on ties with no concrete or asphalt at the point of setting foot upon the ground from the car's step-off point. Improvements were made to this headache whereby the operator no longer needed to leave his car thus eliminating the need for the hand grasp.
